I have a 1982 pontoon built by J C Manufacturing. I currently have a 50 hp Johnson on there was wondering what would be the safest max I could go up to? There isn't any kind of plate on or around the transom for max hp or passengers. Was thinking of possibly a 70 hp? Thanks

What model and Length? You should have a plate close to your helm that states max hp and passengers, but if you provide the actual model and length we might be able to look it up.

It's a 20' boat title has B S V for the model, made by J C Manufacturing 1982. Not sure if boat is in originl condition don't know much about it's history. No plates any where.

In most cases the plate is close to the helm. Have you looked all over the boat, or just around the motor pod? I would think a 70 would be okay, but since it's an '82 model it would be better to verify. The good news is, unlike many pontoon manufacturers of yesteryear, JC is still around, which means you can call them. http://www.jcpontoon.com/

Re: Max hp

Well, from what I can tell, JC Mfg Inc manufactured 3 - 20' boats that year.

20-20 - 20'
24 TRI-HULL-I/O - 24'
24-24 - 24'
28 TRI-HULL-I/O - 28'
28-28 - 28'
820 - 20'
824 - 24'
828 - 28'
ENSIGN 16 - 16'
ENSIGN 20 - 20'
ENSIGN 24 - 24'

You may have to call the manufacturer to get the information you're looking for. Anything posted here would be a "best guess" so it would be ideal to get the info straight from the manufacturer.
