Can anyone tell me what the maximum horsepower would be for a 1984, 196 Aquasport Osprey. I know they recommend a 115, but I have a chance to get a good deal on a sweet 150 but don't want to over HP her. The plate is gone, so I can't read the maximum HP.

Thats almost a 20' boat, and the older Aquasports were pretty sturdy. I think you would have no problem with the 150..MHO...:)

Before you do that do some checking with your insurance company. If you should ever get into an accident there might be a cause for dismissal of your claim due to the vessel being overpowered.
There are lots of other reasons to be on the safe side too.
But as Rick mentioned the boat should hold it. Do a good check on your transom.

The 1983 model was only rated for a 115 and I doubt they upped the rating to 150 on basically the same model boat.

The 1984 needs every bit of the 115 to jump on plane and run at about 38 MPH. If 115 were the max HP, the 75% rule would put the HP at about 85HP and I know that isn't even close enough for good performance. The transom is solid and my insurance agent said there isn't an issue going with the 150, but I'd still like to be sure. I'm not 100% certain, but I believe that 1984 was a year when the 196 Ospreys were changed, but what do I know?

Is there any truth to the 75% HP rule that states a vessel should perform well if your HP is equal to 75% of the max rated HP for the boat? Basically, it says that if your max HP is 200, a 150 HP will do the job.

My 20' Key West is a fiberglass and composite hull, 8' beam, weighs 2200# dry and is rated for 225hp, altho many were sold with both 115's and 150's. All insurance, structural and fitting issues aside, I still find the 150 acceptable for that size hull.

Thanks for all the info. I'm going to go with the 150. It's just to good a motor and deal to let slide by. I had the local marine mechanic give it a look see yesterday. After going through it with his meters, testers, etc., he said it was in great shape and should perform well.
