I am interested in finding out opinions on what the maximum rpm's I should run my engine at without possibly causing catastrophic damage?I have heard that the safe range is from 5500 rpm"s up to 6200rpm's.I have a 1987 175 mercury, the cylinders all ck out with good compression and it runs well.I have had it at 5800 rpms which is the most i could get out of it with current set up.Any special maintenace ideas on allowing it to run at higher rpm's safer.Thanks.

OEM spec is 5300-5800rpms, anything more than 6200rpm hp drops off...

Depends on driver/owner/set-up as 6000rpm will not hurt it. What will hurt it is cooling and fuel issues, there was a TSB on updating the jets on this engine along with the 200hp.

Just make sure your cooling system and lower unit are in top notch shape if you're consistently pushing it that hard for very long.
