What kind of fluid do I use for the hydraulic lift/trim in my 1989 Maxum?

If it's Mercruiser, then they use ATF

Mercruiser does not use, nor do they recommend ATF in the trim pumps, they use engine oil. You don't want to mix types. ATF (Red) --- oil (color of oil).

Here is from the OEM Alpha manual, Bravo is identical.

its a mercruiser 3.o liter, with a merc out drive

That would make it an Alpha I outdrive.
