Since joining and browsing this forum, the Starcraft SS has been the most appealing boat to me. Never actually seen one in person, but there's something about the look of that hull that always caught my attention. I've been working on and off restoring a 20' bass boat, but I need someone to help me complete that project.
So after browsing Craigslist, I found a 1974 16' SS listing for $1500 and went to take a look at it. The owner listed the boat and motor as the year model 1964, but after I handed him $1400 and took a look at the titles and serial numbers, the boat is indeed a '74 model. Pretty much had my mind set on it before I setup a meeting. (I missed another SS16 for $200 months ago). The outboard is a Mercury 650 (65 horse) and it runs pretty well. After the initial warm up, it starts right up.
I have already taken it out 5 times and everything has been great so far, except for the problems I created myself. (Ran into some mud)
The floor on the boat is solid, as is the carpet. It doesn't take on much water at all, maybe a cup full after six hours, so i'm not going the full restoration route yet... but I have taken a two week break to replace the transom.
The entire transom is not rotten, but the two upper side pieces are. I've been experiencing alot of vibration and want to get this taken care of before I cause some damage.
Pictures follow:
Interior is workable, for now:
Bow area (nice and clean, but missing the seating area):
On the water:
Outboard:
More on the next post....
