Re: May I join? Starcraft SS 16
I haven't updated this thread in some time so, here's some news on my part:
I've been taking the boat out pretty much every chance I get since the transom replacement, at least 30 or more trips to various lakes. I've installed a new fish finder and the awesome Minnkota Power Drive V2 trolling motor.
When the weather was forecast for 70 degs. in December, I knew I had to make a trip. I launched at a local lake around 10am and drove around all day, no problems. The Mercury 65 was holding up well and reliable as usual. Around 4pm, I was riding around looking for another spot and I noticed the engine slowing down a bit. This usually indicates that I need to change fuel tanks, and I slowed down and made the switch to my second fuel tank. This normally doesn't stop the engine, but for some reason it did.
It took me at least 20-30 mins to get the engine running stable again. I got back up to speed and when I reached around 27 mph on GPS, about 30 secs after taking off, all I heard was a loud CLUNK! I immediately knew something bad happened and dropped the trolling motor to make it back to the ramp (which took an hour @ 2.0 mph). When I made it back I took the cowl off and there it was, metal pieces falling out of the cowl and a freaking HOLE in the block. You've guessed right: THROWN ROD.
To make a long story short, being down in the dumps, I started craigslist searching for a replacement outboard within a 300 mile radius.
I've been wanting a 85 Evinrude for sometime now for more power and TnT. I saw some 90HP Mercs on some glass boats for sale and almost went and got a glasser for $375 with the 90 Merc.
I ended up finding a 85 'rude for $300! They normally list around these parts anywhere from $500-1200. The bad part is that the 'rude was removed from the boat and was sitting on a patio for god knows how long. The gentleman told me the engine runs good, so since he was a mechanic, I took his word.
The engine did not have any controls, so I took the shifter, harness and cables from my prior bass boat project that is still sitting in the yard.
After figuring out the key switch and mounting the motor on the SC, it took me about 10 mins to get it running! It would have started a bit quicker, but the choke was on!
A busy weekend all around. Only one fish caught, but I ended up with the motor I've been searching for the last six months.
Now I figure out what I need to do to get the 'rude running correctly (water pump, lower unit oil change).
I can't wait to get this thing back on the lake! Who said you had to stop in the Winter?
