May need a new engine...

Ok, so apparently I may have the first cracked block of the year (do I win a cash prize? cause I could use it). My engine is a 1991 Yamaha 205 HP 4.3L V6 Sterndrive. My question is two fold; first, if should have to replace the block, should I just replace the whole engine? Second, if I do replace the whole engine, what types will fit a Yamaha outdrive?

What could something like this set someone back? I've noticed a few people replacing engines lately.

A GM 4.3 for that year range should set right in there.
Does it have Vortec heads? Electric fuel pump?
Just look on Ebasicpower or call rapid-0..
Gonna cost you 1500 to 2200 in that area anyway..

Not sure about the heads, but the fuel pump is mechanical.

and pulling the drive, and needing an alignment tool, and having the drive pressure tested...

If it is mechanical fuel pump then probably not a vortec.
Coors is right,While you got the drive off get it tested.
You can pick up alignment tool on ebay.Same as the Merc,Omc tool..
Look at this link..

Good deal. I just talked to a guy and yep, standard 4.3L GM. Only other thing he said was that my intake manifolds would also have to be replaced from my current 12 bolt to the new 8 bolt.

You should be able to get a rebuilt from Rapido that is a direct match for your engine & not need to replace anything........
Just swap parts......;)

Re: May need a new engine...

That depends on the engine,Vortec had the 8 bolt pattern. The non Vortec are the 12 bolt.
You can get either engine but the Vortec would be a nice upgrade.
Who ever you buy from be very sure its a marine engine.
An auto engine is not designed to run 4500 rpms all day long like a marine engine. They have different cams, freeze plugs and waterpumps..

Post Subject: Freeze Plugs on '96 Merc V6 I/O Posted: 15:54:28 11 Mar 2007
Newbie here and need help. Surprise freeze here in Arizona a while back and wasn't thinking about the boat but rather the RV. While getting it summer ready yesterday when all was done and hooked up the water to start it, the freeze plug on the front of the motor blew out.
Where do I go from here and please be nice. hehe

Right there with you dvan. Got one boat with water leaking out a crack in the block and the other one we discovered yesterday that it has water in the oil.

Dvan - verify that your fuel pump will still work. If they are using an older block with the vortec heads then you should be fine, but if the block is the same vintage as the heads then there will be no provisions for a mechanical pump. you will need an electric one.

Re: May need a new engine...

I noticed that about the fuel pump. WIth the newer 8 bolt layout you have to have a fuel pump too. I sent an email to Capt Ken to see about what he would recommend and what would work with the Yamaha outdrive, and he recommended just getting the new engine, with the internals and then just add my powerstearing, alternator, etc. The new block/engine would come with rollers and lifters for the block, the new four barrel intake manifold, carb, electric fuel pump, and ingnition kit.
