As I understand it one of the folks that helped break the Mayan codes say this is simply the end of one cycle and the beginning of another...kinda like a new year...

Well since they broke the code and started all these predictions of the worlds end why didn't they figure out that the Mayans sacrificed thier own to the gods but didn't figure out they sacrificed the guy who made and kept the calandar up to date!
