I've dug out all the corrosion from in there and see nothing important...when I took the top off I only saw 1 o ring but no gasket...is there supposed to be one

The square holes look just like an empty void kinda deal...reason I pulled cap is there was a water trickle coming out of the front between cap and outdrive...am I to find a hole in those cavities.

One more question on this topic....with cap off I could see gear oil up top...this morning I couldn't...it's coming out from behind the prop...never has had a leak..can't imagine having top cap off would make oil flow out

opening the top is like removing the vent plug to drain it... it removed the vacuum created .

Even with the cap off, it shouldn't leak. Put the cap back on and pressure test the drive...

Not sure how it could develop a leak when it's been in my shop for about a week on the stand...only thing I did was pop the cap. I've ordered a new o ring for there and I will pressure test...oil in or out..I've never done it before

The spring loaded button on the top of the lower vertical shaft pushed the upper gear shaft upward in the driveshaft housing enough that the seal did have enough contact with the seal surface extension on the lower gear. A good chance that either the seal surface is rusted or there is a groove worn where the seal makes contact.
As Chris said pressure test the drive with the oil out.

If it (the lower drive shaft preload pin) is pushing the upper drive shaft (and driven gear) up high enough to open the seal at the bottom, then a leak is the absolute least of his problems!

That would mean either the drive gear to driven gear backlash is so far out that the gears are barely meshing or the drive gear bearing pack is so slack that it's allowing the gears to move a VERY long way ..

I'm still confused as to why it would randomly have an issue. The top cap was off for a few days kinda deal...there has never been a leak...don't get it...it's not even being used...when it was there was no leak

Do the pressure test and the mystery will be solved.

Also, every seal that leaks, at the moment before it started leaking, it didn't leak.

Lol ok I will test it
Test it with VERY low pressure... Too much pressure will force the seal lip to seal up again... I'd use less than 10kpa...
