MC1 Leaking gear oil from lower unit

Greetings,
I know this is an ongoing issue and I've dug through the some of the previous threads on this topic, but thought I'd throw my particular problem in the ring also for some clarification.
I have acquired a 1964 Glastron 19' with the Mercruiser 150 and an MC1 sterndrive.
The boat had been sitting for a couple years with the lower unit in the up position.
I spent a couple hours running the motor to get the shift linkage dialed in and a few days later I noticed water-contaminated gear oil running out of the water intake in the lower unit. I thought I had smelled ninety weight during the dialing in process but didn't think much about it.
I pulled the lower unit and installed a new complete water pump housing and impeller and all (I think) appropriate seals, gaskets and O-rings. Did a pressure test and was please that it held 15 pounds for 24 hours until I wiggled the lower shift shaft. It had about a quarter inch of vertical play and when I pulled up/out on the shaft I lost pressure. So...in goes a new shift shaft seal and after installation I get the same results, looses pressure when I pull it up. I assume at that point that's normal and pressure on the shaft once installed keeps it from lifting up. Lower unit goes back on and presto...everything is working perfectly, shifts great, no smell and I'm thinking I'm a boat mechanic. A week later I'm running the motor working out a fuel pump issue and all is well. 2 days later I'm preparing the boat for its Maiden voyage (since I've owned it) to see if the thing actually floats and I see clean green ninety weight leaking from between the prop and the unit.
I should mention there was an epic battle to get the old bent prop off the shaft while I had the lower unit off the boat for the water pump replacement. This involved heat, hammering, a gear puller and a come-along not to mention bleeding and swearing.
I eventually got the prop off but the rubber cushion on the inside of the prop was still on the shaft. After very careful use with a Dremel I was able to get the rubber cushion removed and the splines seem to be in great shape. Installed a new used prop.
This drive also does not have the oil passage between the upper and lower units.
They are not connected.
My next step is to pull the lower unit and do another pressure test and am going to assume I will find a leak behind the prop.
Anybody have any advise or input as to what I should be looking for?
Am I going to be pulling the bearing carrier or might it be a more simple fix?
Thanks in advance for any help or guidance or therapy anyone might be able to offer.

You most likely don't have a MC1 if it's the original drive.
If my memory is correct --- only the 1A-1B-1C and EZ Shift had separate upper and lower oil cavity's.
Serial number is needed to id these drives, or someone with white/no hair.
Are you able to turn the lower shift shaft with your fingers or does it feel like something is spring loaded?
Pulling up on the shift shaft shouldn't cause a leak. Maybe your missing the clip on the shaft? If I remember right, some of these drives had a shift shaft stop on them.

Serial number is needed to id these drives, or someone with white/no hair.

Serial number is stamped into upper case - port side. Might be under the decal.

Getting a headache. Yes, things were changing soo fast back then. So many variables, trim system, reverse lock, gear lube pump --- so many things changing depending what week it was built and what options that were ordered.

You need sierra marine #18-2150 stainless steel shift shaft &18-7153 shift shaft bushing.
Google mercruiser shift shaft bushing removal tool.
Make sure the tool is completely engaged on the bushing. If you have an impact screwdriver 3/8” drive and a good 6 point 3/4” socket you should be able to loosen the bushing. There is a hairpin clip and a washer under the bushing which holds the shaft in place. Do not try to pull the shaft out because the hairpin clip then falls into the gear case.
