Mc1 mecruiser 260 wants to rev before slaming into gear.

So my mc1 seems to shift into reverse good but wants to rev slightly before it slams into fwd. Could this be lower shift cable issue? I was thinking it was interruptor switch but I read the switch only engages when goin out of gear. I tried adjusting cables by shifting and turning prop by hand to get them to shift equally. Has new upper shift cable and throttle cable. Havnt changed lower cable. Havnt had it in water since I installed newer upper cable. I tired adjusting the upper cable while out on water but only on engine side. Not the control side. I've only ran it on hose and still wants to slightly rev before shifter is fully engages and wants to click unless I try quickly put it in gear and bring throttle back down. Hope this makes sense.

The lower shift cable has the pinned barrel so there isn't much to adjust. But after some research and looking at pics online turns out what ever crack head Fred that worked on it before set the throttle linkage up backwards at handle and the cable wasn't seated in bracket correctly. Also the cable at carb was connected to bottom of carb linkage instead of top of linkage. I assumed thays how it went because that's how it was when i got it. So after fixing all that, now while on the hose it will go into gear without wanting to rev or engage throttle. And maintains around 600 rpms. Does make a clanking noise as it engages but I assume it's normal being out of water and on a hose?

Clanking in not normal. Clunking is normal.

You happen to have a link for the manual on how to set up the shift cables? Its more like a clicking like its trying to engage but that's if I move the shifter slow. If I do it quickly it will clunk in to gear. But it fully engages right before the throttle engages, like a hair or right as throttle starts too. On both fwd and reverse. Cable probably is stretched some and if imagine shift fork/teeth is probably worn some. I plan on changing the cable this winter. Along with checking engine alignment and impeller. Just hoping to get a couple trips in this winter to see if anything else needs to be addressed over winter.

It's a dog clutch system, don't 'ease' it into gear. It's either in gear or out, never halfway...
