Here are pics of a McKee 14. Is this a viable project? The transom was cut down for some reason. I guess I could build it up? Boat needs paint, hardware, and interior. I can get it for a couple hundred dollars.

Thoughts?

It is viable if the end result will do what you want it to. If you are just wanting to flip a boat for profit, that is generally a bad idea.

The transom was probably cut down because someone only had a shortshaft motor to put on it. You would need to replace the entire transom to fix this.

Jason,
The intent would be to fix for my two kids (12 and 14). I can get the boat and a good 30hp motor to fit for $1250. Of course, I can get a pretty nice one for around $3K.....probably the smarter way to go.

In this neck of the woods, $1250 will get you a 16' with a strong running 70 or 75HP outboard.

billh. ok, for the kids, what do they want to do. fish, pull a tube, wake board, ski. this they question. it looks like a good safe hull for a starters, the power is my concern. what's it rate for. my experience is the kids tend to use them and do very little maint. and of course when the tank is empty, they want dad to fill it up. my kids use to cut lawns to fill up their tanks. also take them to the safe boating course before you turn the loose with it. there are some on line courses available.

Although the photos didn't show up, I 'd say give it a shot by seeing if your children like it pretty much as is--it's agreat size and stabel boat for that age, put a 25-30 on it--why not just run a short shaft?
