Can someone help me figure out if I have a 12ft or 13ft steering cable.........do I measure the rod on the end of the cable that goes thru the tube on the motor, or just measure the cable?...........

and are the new telefex cables as stiff as the old ones?

Re: Measuring old steering cable ?

I'm not sure if it's either of the spots you have marked. Have you measured your boat using the system they suggest? It sure worked for me.

My old system was a Morse system. The cable was a slightly larger diameter and was slightly more stiff but there wasn't much difference. My new system is a Uflex Rotech system. I'm quite happy with it.

You do have to fight them a bit to get them installed and be careful not to bend them too much. I believe it tells you what kind of radius is tolerable when installing.

I found this but can make no sense of it .what is a gunwale....and what does transom center line mean? ( the middle of transom ?)

Steering Assembly

One of the most important factors in the installation of the steering assembly is the kength of the steering lines. Too loose and someone will trip over them. Too tight and either they won't have enough play to work properly or they might not reach the engine. Proper measurement will ensure that the correct length of cable or hose is bought for your system. Refer to measuremewnts A, B, and C in the diagram below:

Fig. B Dash to transom

Fig. C Gunwale to transom center line

and i found this but it doesn't help much either............can someone explain it to me like I'm 2 :)

I found this and I can understand this one a little better :)
......But I am still not sure what this means .....C = Gunwale to centerline of cable
connection at centered tiller.

and i found this , but still don't know for sure where to stop measuring at ?

For Rotary Steering Cable Replacement:
Measure Existing Cable as follows:
Measure plastic cable jacket (casing, dimension “Y”) in inches, add
18”, and round up to next even foot. Order that length cable.

Re: Measuring old steering cable ?

In this case the gunwale is the side channel in which the cable will run. The term gunwale comes from the old term meaning a reinforced siding area of the boat where cannons were mounted.

They basically want to know how far it is from the steering wheel axis to the inside of the side wall of your boat at the same height level that your steering gearbox is. This is measurment "A".

Then measure the distance from the point the steering gearbox will be to the inside wall of the transom. This will be measurment "B".

Then from the side channel (gunwale) over to the center of your motor (transom center line) is measurement C.

If you're hooking your steering through your tilt tube, you add A, B & C, then add 6" to your total. If this total is anywhere between 133" to 144" you need a 12' cable. If it is anywhere between 145" and 156" you need a 13 ft. cable.

It doesn't really sound like you're wanting to listen to suggestions.
