mechanic issue

Hey everyone,

I am having an issue with a mechanic that was reccomended to me. About 5 month ago i dropped off an outboard motor that wouldnt run. He seemed very knowledgable etc, well after taking him a couple various parts for a month or so he said he had it running and would bring it up the next morning. Well a month went be with me checking in 3 or so times a week and he finally said it was only firing on one cylinder. I told him to just bring it up and dont do anything else to it. Well its been well over a month of me going by there and calling and when i talk to him it is the same "tomorrow" crap. I am more than a little frustrated and a little worried that something may be extremily "not on the up and up".

My question is should i mention that if he doesnt have my motor and the parts i brought him back later that day or in the morning i will file a police report? I dont want to be too drastic or **** him off to where he jacks with my motor.

What would you reccomend?

Thanks

Re: mechanic issue

Whole deal sounds fishy.

Why's he have to deliver it anywhere? Where is he when you go by to check on it?

I think I'd tell him I'll be by on X date and time, if he says he won't be 'there' (wherever that is), ask him where he'll be, and you'll meet him for it.

Re: mechanic issue

My buddy had the same issue with a car mech., I kept asking my buddy when he was going to get his car back off this guy. I had to step in because my buddy didn't want to **** this guy off as he was "a friend". He kept getting the same old "this week sometime" & "sometime" never came. I started stopping down this guy's shop every day for a week or so & he got the idea after awhile. In your case I'd just show up at this guy's shop when you see his car or know he'll be there & just tell him "hand it over", if not call the cops & bring them with you next time.

If he was a great mechanic, why is it that you had to obtain and deliver parts? Clue #1 that something was not right. Stop in and pick up your motor.

Go pick it up today before he tears it up worse. Is this an actual shop, or just some guy?

its an automotive shop, he does quite a bit of boat work on the side. Around here the only boat specific shops are atleast a 2 hour drive and not so dependable on top of that.

Re: mechanic issue

there are some mechanics/shops .....and it dont matter what they work on, cars, boats, lawnmowers etc, that hope people will abandon their stuff. these shops then repair it for way less than the owner was quoted, and re-sell it. if i were you, i would just randomly show up...dont call ahead, take your motor, and make sure all the parts are there. most shops arent like this, but sadly they exist.

Re: mechanic issue

Update,

Well i got my motor back, still not running of course...
Much to my surprise i pulled the hood off and the solenoid, rectifier, and switchbox were all not there.. i was not happy to say the least. All of the parts, minus most of the screws were in a small box with the parts i had taken to fix it. I am still missing a couple odd and end peices that i called and requested back as well.

Basically i spent the next two days figuring out the wiring and putting it back together so i can start over at the same spot i was in several months ago.

Moral of the story: Dont let ANYONE work on your boat that you spent your hard money on unless you personally know they are trustworthy. And if you have any doubts about a mechanics ability spend a little more $ and in the end it will likely save you a bundle of time, worry, and cash.

I would honestly file a police report for your missing parts. what a jerk :(

Write some honest reviews of this guy on line somewhere. Where are you located?
