Hi i'm fairly new on iboats, this is my second thread. So here's the deal. An acquaintance mechanic mixed the hoses on my impeller pump. Volvo Penta 5.7 gl-e. After several minutes into sea, the engine is smoking, the hose on the exhaust elbow tore, a heat sensor melted a bit, and the paint on the risers kinda bubbled. What should I do now? Is the damage limited to the obvious parts I have noted or do you guys think there's more damage that's not so obvious. Thanks for all the advise in advance!

There very well could be more damage, first thing to come to mind is blown head gasket. All that said, just put the hoses back on, check the impeller, back flush, then fire it up.

Ayuh,.... I'd think ALL of the rubber exhaust parts should be replaced,... gaskets too maybe,...

Donno if Volvo was still usin' shutters with yer's or not,...

A Compression test, 'n leak-down test will tell ya whether the motor came through it Ok,...

Im in the procedure of changing the hoses, and Ill be giving her a compression test soon. Though the reading on my temp gauge was normal throughout the run, the manifolds were smoking hot. How can that be?

Ayuh,.... My guess is the stagnate water in the block held the temp, while the manifolds which run considerably Hotter, 'n the exhaust flow had No water flow to cool the rubber parts,...

Hey Bondo! what I understand your saying is I got off easy without overheating the engine, and I only have the exhaust components to worry about. I sure hope that's the case.

I changed the exhaust bellows and took her to sea. All was fine except the exhaust manifold has a minor leak and seeps a bit of water, the engine runs smooth. The exhaust manifolds are original Volvo Penta. Could I run different brands on each side, or do both exhaust manifolds have to be the same brand? Thanks!
