FR thanks for the tip. I will look into it in the morning. If I need to change the plugs instead of doing a search do you know gap size?

Re: Mechanic told me that motor is to old for fixing is he right?

guys here is what I found with out even taking of the fly wheel. The spark plug wire to middle spark plug is frayed. It looks like it was rubbing the flywheel which most likely is causing the missing. Also I noticed that the boot on the coil wire looks a little rough. Not sure if this is an issue but it does not look like I can replace this wire. I might need to splice into it, but first I want toe replace the sparkplug wire to see if it fixes the missing issue. Anybody know where I can get the wires for this 1971 60HP?

Well, here is MY 2 cents. Don't be afraid to try and fix this yourself. It sounds like there isn't much wrong with it. You can buy spark plug lead by the foot at your local marine supplier. If anyone tells you that parts are obsolete, then that is only one source out of many. Below, are several more to check out for parts for your motor. Check out Sea-Way first. They're pretty good help for motors like yours and older. I'm pretty sure you won't have to go any further down the list, but keep this list on your desk top, just for future reference.

Spark wire is part of the coil. I don't know if it is possible to pull it out and replace it or not, since I've never tried it.

Also, the wires screw into the distributor cap. You can't just pull them out. You have to rotate the whole wire to unscrew it.

Furthermore, the threaded end on the wires is crimped onto the wire. Impossible to do without the proper crimping tool. Best to buy the complete wire assembly, already made up at the factory. But you CAN replace the spark plug boot.

you would be surprised on some of these old motors. i took a chance on a 1970 evinrude 85 hp, and so far its turning out well. i paid $150 for it, it wouldnt start. after popping off the flywheel and cleaning the points, it fired right up. im replacing the impeller, lower unit fluid and the o ring in the tilt pump and going to the lake. worst case scenero i can part it out and make my money back.

you can also use liquid electrical tape and regular electrical tape to repair frayed wire. I hope it all works out well for you Andy, good luck.

I was wondering about the black tape or liquid black tape. I was wondering about using the liquid plack tape around the bad boot from the coil. I am not sure if it would hold up on the spark plug wire though

it should hold up fine temporarily to be able to get the motor running..I would not sink any $$$ into that motor until I was sure it was worth keeping, as has been mentioned previously you can quickly get to over $500 in parts..In my opinion anything over $200 in parts would be better served going towards a good used motor from the 80s or newer..I see them for $500 pretty regular already running, and that would be a motor worth putting new parts onto and much easier to work on and get parts for. If you could muster $1200 the newer optical ignition motors run great and you would be very happy. just be sure to take your compression gauge and spark gap tester when you go, also take it for a run if possible before buying.

To me, this is an opinion situation. I have lots of old outboards, most of which are older than yours. I don't hesitate at all, to fix them up.

That said, I don't fool with the battery-CD motors like yours. I do have a 1972 Johnson 65hp, but that is a very different "animal," because it has magneto-CD ignition. IMO opinion, that is a much more reliable ignition system and can be expected to remain reliable for extended periods.
