Re: Mechanical Emergency Toolkit--Necessary?

An emergency toolkit is a must on any motorized vehicle. Be careful in buying the cheap stuff as well. I had a breakdown this spring about 30 miles back in the bush on a quad and my buddy hauls out his new ratchet set to save the day. There he was braggin about this kit he just bought and we were all impressed with all the stuff it had in it for like $30.The plastic ratchet stripped out on the first bolt. The body was some kind of metal but the inner ratchet mechanism was not. Gotta love some of the stuff they bring in from china. We did get it fixed but with no tools it would have been a real pita. All the guys running points on their boats should be packin a spare set and my buddy has a real ratchet in his kit.

Agree 100% with that. Last thing I want in case of an emergency is cheap tools. You'll find that most of the cheap socket sets have a VERY deep bevel on the front of the socket. They have to because the metal is not strong enough to take the full stress on the edge of the socket without cracking. It's so deep that in the case of the smaller sockets, it's actually deeper than the thickness of the head of the bolt you're trying to turn, so the socket never grabs the bolt. On the ones not quite as small, they barely grab the top edges of the bolt and proceed to round them off for you .......
