Tried to do a search with no luck. I have a 1982 Capri with the Volvo 4 cylinder. It runs pretty good as it is, but I think it would benefit it greatly to have magnetic points for better reliability and performance. What do you all think??

Do you mean electronic ignition over points? If that is so and you can find the parts, then yes I would do it. JMHO

Re: Mechanical to magnetic points conversion??

Do you or anyone else have an idea where someone would go looking at for something like this??? Would Volvo parts have what I would need and that would work for the marine use? Is there a well known after market parts company for our boats and engines. If it's not obvious, I'm new at this... :) Thanks in advance.

PS Disregard on my request for info on parts....they are right here on this site.

I can't say for sure because I'm not exactly sure what you have. You may find something from Mallory Ignition under their marine applications.

Re: Mechanical to magnetic points conversion??

So I am a first time boat owner, first time bayliner boat owner and first time old bayliner boat owner... lol. Not sure if its the best combination time will tell. I haven't worked on engines before but I am a mechanical engineer so I should be able to do some damage at least.

My boat is a 1988 18' capri i/o with a 4 cyl omc ford cobra 2.3l engine. Same thing as this guy - it has points and I was told I could replace it with an electronic ignition which would be 1000 times better. The previous owner said he had to adjust the points alot.

Can anyone point to where and maybe how-to's on replacing this? He seemed to make it like it was a matter of taking a part off and replacing it with the electronic ignition??

Thanks,
Sean
