I'm looking at buying a boat powered by a mercury xr 6. Believe it's 1999 or maybe 2000. Current owner says it's low hours but honestly that's a pretty old motor. I'm having a mercury service outfit check it out. Any thoughts about this motor in particular. If it is actually in good shape, how much life can I get out of it in reality? Also, what problems can I expect to have?? Thx

absolutely one of tha best "basic" motors they built.. 2000 or new is gonna be whats called a "electronic" motor.. cdms and such ignition.. 1999 will be a switch box ignition motor.. easier (for as i'm concerned) ta diagnose and fix.... either will run for a very long time with proper care... jmo.

Agreed. The design was born in 1978 and was copied by OMC a few years later. A very solid design. Make sure the oil injection is adjusted and working properly. If you premix, make sure you use fresh fuel for best operation.
