"It appears we have appointed our worst generals to command forces, and our most gifted and brilliant to edit newspapers! In fact, I discovered by reading newspapers that these editor/geniuses plainly saw all my strategic defects from the start, yet failed to inform me until it was too late.

Accordingly, I'm readily willing to yield my command to these obviously superior intellects, and I'll, in turn, do my best for the Cause by writing editorials - after the fact."

20-20 hindsight is a gift often displayed by those who didn't have the decisions to make.

Re: Media - Some things never change

I was in the 101st with then Major General Patraeus when he was in Iraq the first time. Little known facts about General David Patraeus.

He commanded one of the 101st Airborne Aviation Battalions in Gulf one.
He has a BS and MS in International relations.
He has a Ph.D from Princeton, in International Relations I beleve.
He was shot by one of his own soldiers on a rifle range at Campbell, and almost lost a lung. The doctor turned senator from Vandy in Nashville saved his life, and his lung. (Frist?)
He dropped from the sky like a stone when he had a major canopy malfunction at Bragg when in the Eighty Duece and broke a leg.
The man is 54 and still runs a 2 mile PT test in 12 minutes, even AFTER the leg and lung incident.
When we were in Iraq in 2003, we didn't have insurgents or IED's in Mosul. As soon as we pulled out, and a new command and commander came in, they started getting bombed and attacked.

Patraeus isn't Patton, but he is the closest thing we now have. An intellectual in a uniform . He accepted the job because he thought he could make a difference. The Hill is now trying to thwart that effort. They say it is to send a message to the President. The message they'll end up sending is to the troops and the American people. If they allow Patraeus a chance, HE will make a diference where no one else can. If they pull the plug, we'll lose the best military mind we have in this fight, and in the process, the fight itself.

I'm retired now, going on 3 years. But one son is a USAF Staff Sergeant and one is an Army 2nd Lieutenant. Isn't it sad that a long dead, honorable, General Officer and member of the long gray line could see 143 years ago that the press was a problem?

Support the troops!

It is nice to hear from someone that was actually there instead of all the pontification.

Thank you, Gabby, for your service.

No need to thank me. Truly. (it is appreciated, but not necessary)

I mention my service often, especially with some of these posters, but I'm not doing it to blow a horn. Unlike a lot of chosen professions, the military isn't a job. It's a lifestyle. I lived it for 22 years and am still living it, working for the DoD. Therefore, it permeates my life. Other than my family, golf and of course, the other woman at the marina, it is a huge part of my life.

OK, now that you know I'm double dipping, let the cheap shots fly

Well at least you admit to being in the 101worst Puking Buzzards!
Maybe thats the first step of a 12 step program! LOL

Eighty Duece ??
Thats the 82nd Airborne to you son! :)

If he had been in the 82nd he would have known how to do a
proper PLF and not broke a leg! ;)

Like that makes a difference! Like you BTDT :)

Best wishes to you and your sons.
Please pass this on to them.

That should be the Screaming Eagles Brother. At worst, the Puking Chicken, but NEVER the pukin buzzards.

I at least called it the Eighty Deuce, and NOT the Anal Americans! I know they can shine some Corcoran's but can they fight?

Besides, it takes a man to be a dope on a rope. Any old sack of mail can be tossed out of a perfectly good aircraft. d:) Provided your riggers knew what the heck they were doing, you shuld be OK. I figure with General P some jealous staff weenie saw that 101 combat patch and glided under him and stole his air, collapsing his canopy. :':)%

Cheers.

Oh yea Gab, definitely another pile of thanks here from the swamplands of Louisiana. Your service is highly commendable, as is each and every man and woman on this board who served in our military, whether or not they support the current administration or war.

Just remember guys, the troops need our support. And no, you really can't support the troops and not the war. That's like saying you support a team, but not a particular game they play against an opponent. That's a crock of BS. Support them in everything they do!
