Since it is almost time for open enrollment in medicare I was curious to hear from Medicare eligible people who are using the Advantage plans as an alternative to original Medicare. I have been on a BCBS HMO advantage plan for the past several years and have been well satisfied with it. This is a voucher plan where Social Security sends my SS $115 premium (plus what the government kicks in)directly to a private insurer of my choice. Unlike original medicare that pays only 80% my plan has paid 95 to 100% and for $18 a month I have a prescription plan that pays with no co-pay on mail order and only $4 co-pay at the local pharmacy. So basically I am paying $18 per month for better coverage. These plans are not available in all areas of the country but it is worth looking into.
