Melonized distributor gear

I'm in the middle of my engine build so i figured now would be a good time to call COmp Cams and see what gear to run on my distributor for their 264 marine cam. The Comp Cams rep said to use a melonized distributor gear. I've looked it up (because he wouldn't tell me what it was) on Summits website. It looks strangely like the stock gear on my mercruiser distributor. Is this correct or do i need to order one?

Thanks,

Re: Melonized distributor gear

A melonized or brass gear is required so as to not prematurely wear your cam shaft gear that drives the distributor. The melonized coating is molecules thick so you can't tell the difference on sight. If Comp said that's what they recommend, that's definately what I'd go with....after all, it's the part that mates to the cam so they'd know!

On MercruiserParts.com does not give the part number of the gear for the 88-95 models. The merc part number is 43-818807 for the melonized gear. Only $55. :O
