Meltdown 200XP

Boat was running and stopped like it was out of gas. Smoke coming out of engine cover. Cooled off and cranked up and made it back to landing. Took cover off and one powerpack had melted and dripped hot debris on wiring underneath and melted plastic and wiring. Ordered new powerpacks and wiring harness and started to replace them and noticed that the rectifier had been damaged also. I wondered which part caused the problem and if my stator is alright. It looks fine and none of the wiring is damaged. I want to know if there is a way to test it?

Seeing you did not list the year of motor, I am assuming a pre 1988 motor. Separate power packs is the indicator.

If you over heated a power pack and melted it, then you are more than likely going to have to replace both power packs, the rectifier, and the stator. Sorry to tell you this. Unless you like paddling home. If you don't then you run a high risk or replacing each componet multipul times until you get to them all. You run a higher rish that the voltage spikes, and the voltage fluxuations caused by the non replaced componets will damage the new ones.

The most common componet to fail is the rectifier. The potting material inside the rectifier drips all over everything making it look worse than it is.

I have been thinking about your issue. You say the electrical components got hot enough to melt. Was the motor over heating and the aluminum block got hot enought to melt the plastic? I would do a compression test on the motor before ordering any electrical parts. That way you know if the power head does not need a rebuild. The compression on these motors are low to begin with. Around the 80-95psi range. You are looking for a spreed of no more than 10psi between the top and lowest numbers. Also if the block did over heat. you might want to change out your t-stats and impeller. The rectifiers are liquid cooled on the block water. if the block is not getting enough water then the rectifier will go bad. Just another thought.

good call on that jeff compression test is a must ! definitly check t stats and impeller i would be looking at your cylinders to see what they look like but the compression test might give you a hint
