Melting voltage regulators?????????????

I have a ' 96 20.5ft Seaswirl with a 175 EFI Merc. I had it out two weeks ago and it died. I pulled the cover off the motor and many wire and one viltage regulator were melted. I ordered a new regulator, and re-wired all of the melted wires. Took it for a 10 minute ride and the new regulator started to smoke.

Why is this happening?

FYI -
- I replaced the first with a CDI regulator.
- I have a dual battery switch, but did not touch it with motor running.

Need to check and make sure not over charing

Several items: Bad ground on coil plate or divider plate, wrong amp rectifier/regulator installed, battery with internal short, wrong flywheel..
