Re: Memorial Day Madness

ahhhhh... I was waiting for this thread. I had absolutely no desire to go out on Monday. Its way to crowded with too many drunks. I went out last night with wife and kids and had a great time. Empty water all to ourselves. Put me down for skipping 4th of July and Labor day also!

Re: Memorial Day Madness

At least you guys have the option of going out and hitting a beach.
Just read in the local paper that it may not be until mid july before we start seeing usable beach on Lake Champlain due to the flooding.
My boats still in drydock, 4 feet from waters edge. The problem is, when they put the boat in drydock last year, I was 40 feet from the water. We're holding pretty steady between 2-3ft over flood stage... All the marinas are under water. :/

I don't go to the lake or down to the coast on Memorial, 4th of July, or Labor Day weekends. Instead we stay home and BBQ or have a big Crawfish boil... much more relaxing!

Re: Memorial Day Madness

I used to never go out on the big holidays, partly because I expected it to be a nightmare on the water, and because I didn't have the ICW in my backyard.

This year, the wife and kid wanted to go to the beach, and I figured WTH, if it's crazy, we'll put the boat back on the lift and watch a movie.

Turns out it, Sunday was a great boating day. Wasn't too crowded, and once you got into the Gulf to go to the island, it was like any other non-holiday. Beach was busy, but everyone was well behaved, and seemed like they knew what they were doing. Only 'excitment' was a guy in a pontoon that didn't realize he was still in a no wake zone (told him, and he slowed back down).

Went fishing on Monday, and was really surprised how few boats there were. I guess everyone was home bbq'ing. Went 15 miles out, and saw 3 other boats in 4 hours.

For Florida being the boating capital, you wouldn't have known it this weekend. Yawn.

I went fishing at a dinky little lake in the midel of nowhere thinking msot of the idiots woudl go the bigger lakes or river around here and was mostly right.

Got there at 6:30 and was 3rd in line to launch, pulled out at 3:00 and it was a mad house, this launch will hold maybe 20 trucks and there were at least 25 there, had 3 waiting to pull out and had 2 people just pull in and back down the ramp, of coarse the last one had a dead battery, we had a moderately polite discussion an he moved off till he could get it started, it was interesting.

Ha these stories are entertaining. Some people in my party were definitely "that guy" at the ramp. We put in at table rock lake, it was in flood stage so the ramp was on the tricky side. I let a buddy of mine tow my boat 200miles to the lake because he had a nice truck. Well there is 7 of us all together, 3 of which are brothers. We had to back the boat into the loading area just above the ramp because of no place to turn around. All three brothers are yelling at each other while I'm in the boat waiting for the water. I ask the one brother to remove the straps off the stern from the trailer, he does. We finally get backed in the the boat is floating above the trailer. 2 of the brothers are trying to push the boat off, it must have looked ridiculous! Come to find out the one brother forgot that there were straps on both sides holding the boat to the trailer. Finally get in an enjoyed a weekend of fun.

The exact same thing happened on Monday when we were loading up, the 3 brothers yelled and screamed at each other for 15 minutes before they got the trailer in the water, all of which took a turn at doing. I just sat on my boat in the cove until they were ready. Lol acted like I wasn't with them

Re: Memorial Day Madness

I chose to miss the weekend, and thought I had outsmarted everybody by going Tuesday afternoon. At the local lakes here the stupidity carried over a day! It is an old launch right on the side of the road, you actually have to pull down a side road and wait to pull across to launch. On guy drove right in and blocked off the line, while the guy backed into the water was trying to start his boat on the trailer, but having trouble. (only one ramp). Finally got the boat on the trailer started, and swung it around the dock, by the time he got back in his truck a boat from the lake was hovering over his trailer expecting to cut in line and retrieve! 5 of us were in his way! I could not believe the chaos! Once in the water we had an awesome evening of fishing and relaxing, and I chose not to go near the launch till dark. We had it all to ourselves then!

Re: Memorial Day Madness

The wife and I went out to do some night fishing on Thursday night, had a great time and she got to battle a 12lb cat on a zebco spin cast real. That got intresting.

But all in all it was nice and quiet. I typically fish at a small state lake, there were about 6 other boats on the water when we got there but no crazy stuff going on.

I choose to either stay at home on a holiday weekend or go to a private lake ( we are the only boat on the water).

Re: Memorial Day Madness

I was out on Sunday and Monday and it was nuts. I am inexperienced as well but I found myself getting mad at several people, ecspecially the idiot on the PWC who cuts over in front of me when I am doing 30mph and then he gets off his gas. I almost ran his stupid #$$ over. I have to say that everytime out for me is a new adventure. I learn something new everytime. I still get anxious loading and unloading when the rams are busy but I pretty much have it down pretty well now.

I'm glad I joined this site before going out the first time, because I learned enough here not to do some of the things in this post and managed to keep dry and not sink the boat. Thanks iboats!!:)
