Anyone here have a memory foam bed like the Tempur-Pedic? I hear good and bad. What I am interested most in finding out is if you feel stuck in the spot you sink into, or is it easy to roll and change positions? How well do they hold up over time?

Re: Memory foam beds

Mark, I bought a Tempur-Pedic full size plus pillows and returned it after five nights. I found it to be to firm for my liking and I didn't sink into it at all. I have RA and this bed really made me ache. When I returned it they told me I was the first person to return one and I did get stuck with the pillows. Neither my wife or I like the pillows to this day and at $75 @ I tried to get used to them.

Hey OMC,

Well you are not the first to return a Tempur-Pedic bed, I have read a few accounts on the net about people not liking them and returning them. Most reviews are favorable, but the ones that are negative do have valid points.

Another complaint is that they are "hot" because the foam acts as insulation against your body.

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=40&threadid=798948&enterthread=y

Paiinfully long thread about memory foam beds, but ALOT of great info if you have the patience to read through it. Tells you how you can put together a matress very similar to the tempur-pedic one for less than half the price (5" or 6" foam base along with a good quality 4" memory foam topper).

Re: Memory foam beds

Crabby,
Darn! That is one expensive bed! It is over $4,000 for a king in their lowest price model!!! Yikes!!!

So all those fancy foam and air type mattresses are off my list. Either too pricey, or I just don't feel like experimenting with new technology that gets a wide range of reviews. That and wife is leaning toward a traditional spring bed so we know what we're buying.

I have called around to places like 1-800-MATTRESS, Sleepys, and other advertised discount bedding stores. Of course, none of them call the same bed by the same name so you can't compare apples to apples between them.

I found that Walmart.com (of all places!) has the Simmons brand (the one with individually wrapped coil springs). So I pick out a king size, get the price with delivery and tax and call 1-800-MATTRESS. They advertise they will beat competitors price by at least 20% or its free. I give them the model of the bed, and they come back $500 higher without delivery, take away, tax or extras. I told them the price I have, and they can go online and see the same price and they guy says "wow thats a good price... Good luck with it." and hangs up! What about the free offer or beating by 20%????? LOL! These mattress sales people are all about commission and inflated prices.

I called a few other discount places and got similar responses. I just placed my order with Walmart. I can wait two weeks to save $600 - $800 over the discounters.

Re: Memory foam beds

I had sore shoulders and hips from a "normal" mattress, Mark. I sleep on my side and those joints were supporting all my body weight.

I investigated the Tempur-Pedic and suffered severe sticker shock.

On the advice of my daughter the Physical Therapist I went to Sam's Club and bought a 4" memory foam pad and a pillow for about a C-note and change. I installed it on top of my premium brand mattress.

End of trouble. I still switch sides two or three times a night and am comfortable.

Many years ago I slept on a goose down mattress. Like sleeping on a cloud. This is just as good.

I recommend the 4" memory foam pad.

Good luck. :)

Re: Memory foam beds

here in ireland these tempur matresses are advertised as "developed for the space programme" and "mould themselves around the body, supporting it" the problem i have is, in space you are weightless so how does the matress shape around you?

Re: Memory foam beds

I normally don't have any problem sleeping on a regular bed. But ours is just plain worn out with a big sag in the middle. Time for a new one. Of course it comes at a time when our expenses are just zooming out of this world. But that's the way it always is, right?

Garydoole, I often thought the same thing! :D

BTW, Costco.com also has mattresses with high coil counts for good prices.

Re: Memory foam beds

I have had a Tempur-Pedic for about 10 years now. I have a bad back and bit the bullet on the price. It was great for about the first 6 years then developed a sag in the middle. More like a soft spot and didn't hold firm like it used too. The company refused to replace or warranty it since it didn't show a visable sag of more than 1" when sat on the floor. My wife agrees with me that it has lost it's firmness. I wouldn't purchase another one as i don't like the way they have handled the warranty issue and won't stand behind it.

John

Re: Memory foam beds

I am totally with JB. 3" - 4" Memory foam topper (4lb foam) night and day (esp if you have back problems like me). You can get them really cheap at overstock.com 1 price all sizes - buy a King and cut it to size. Use extra for your favorite easy chair, etc....

Re: Memory foam beds

Crabby,

Now you tell me!

Those mattress toppers sound like a good idea. We have a thinner version of egg crate foam on top of our bed now and wife likes it. I don't really notice.

We have a queen, and ordered a king, so on top of the mattress/foundation/frame cost, there is new sheets, pillows, comforters, etc. Also the headboard/footboard from our queen (matches bedroom set) will not fit a king. Then last night wife suggests that we sell our bedroom set and buy another so we can get a king size headboard/footboard and matching bedroom set.

I think I have been scammed by my own wife...

O.k., so for recushioning a forward berth; solid foundation with 4" memory foam, and a medium weight fabric? Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks...

When you say 'solid foundation' do you mean something hard like plywood? Don't know for sure, but wonder if the memory foam alone would be too soft without something under it. I know the memory foam nattresses usually have 4" of memory foam on top of a much firmer 6" or so regular foam base. Memory foam toppers are usually used on top of a regular mattress, not on a top of a wood base.

If you really want knowledgable advice, go to the link I posted above, join, and ask your question. You may want to be a bit more specific in your description; those guys are computer oriented, not boat oriented.

Re: Memory foam beds

Just a quick update on the Simmons bed we ordered from Walmart. It was delivered within their estimated dates, setup by the delivery service and the old bed taken away.

We got the Luxury Firm bed, and although I like it, my wife thinks it is too hard. So whe ordered a 2" thick memory foam mattress topper. It sits right on the mattress, with a plastic mattress cover over it (we still have a 2 yr old and this is to prevent accidents from getting in the foam) and a regular quilted mattress pad over that.

I have to admit, this is now the most comfortable bed I have owned. The memory foam gives just enough that it is really comfortable. And no more lower back pain in the morning from sleeping on a bed that sagged like a hammock!

Wife has since re-arranged the entire room, got new curtains, added a few chairs for a sitting area, throw carpet, new sheets, new comforter, new pillows, and now she is shopping for a new bedroom set... Geez. All I wanted was a new mattress.
