Merc 1000-What is this??

I have this same motor but mine doesn't have this part that's inside the red box drawn on the picture. Just curious as to what it is and what it's for. Is it important? Thanks.

It's to latch the top part of the cover on. There should be one on each side, pop the top piece on(I'm sure it has a term). then push the latch up and turn it 90 degrees to latch it in. Then put the rest of the jacket that wraps around on. my 1000SS has it.

Hmmm...I guess mine are just missing. Seems unnecessary with the hook (part #25) on the back of the top cowl that hooks into top frame support/flywheel cover (#28). I guess it would make it more secure. Thanks for the reply.

Yeah I deffinately don't ahve a hook so I'm sure it's just i difference in years
