I have a couple questions i hope you guys can help awnser. Actually several

1. when i removed the lower unit, which was very simple, there was gear oil around the water pump and in random areas of the lower leg, is this normal? there was no water in lower unit just dark gear oil.

2. If the water pump were to leak a bit of water where dos it go? looking down into the lower unit ,it appears it would go into the gear case, where does it go?

3. when i install the impeller and put the housing back on do i need any sealant on the base to ensure a good seal?

4. when i removed the impellar, it held its shape as when it was installed and had cracks in 2 of the vanes, is this enough to cause it to not pump water, or could it be something else?

5. The od of my shaft is .433" and there are 2 impellars, the one i ordered is .438 id ,does that seem right. sierra part # 183054.

6. when reinstalling the lower unit, are there any tips to a good alignment when re connecting?

7. I noticed before i removed the lower unit that there was some oil seepage where the lower unit mates to exhaust housing, is this normal?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

are you sure it was gear oil, and not exhaust and water? The impeller being bent could cause problems, if they break off and get to the motor there can be even more problems. The shaft size should be fine. If the lower unit was full and the oil was not contaminated with water you should be fine.

Ill really didnt check,it could have been exhaust oil, and there was some water, the impeller was intact but held its curled shape and had a few cracks in the veins,it was definetly on its way out. When i drained the lower unit i got about a half cup or so of dark gear oil,no water intrusion or meatal particles, didnt seem like alot though, but i could be wrong.

That all sounds about right to me and yes, the impeller is shot. Just refill the gear oil and you'll be fine.....Good luck.

Do you know what type of gear oil I should use, manual says a Heavy gear oil should be used but that's it, I seen castrol has a 90 weight outboard gear oil at crappy tire, can I use that.
