I replaced the water pump impeller. The pump is working fine. My shifter is now stuck in reverse. I cant get it to move forward even with the lower unit off. Any suggestions?

Never mind fellas....I got it. The teeth on the gears had slippped somehow. I have replaced water pumps on many different models. This little thing was a pain. But I'm better for it.

How can you tell if it's just the impeller and not the pump? I just got my first outboard on ebay and runs great in a bucket but no water coming out. Any help would be great.

Well the impellar does the pumping. You might have corrosion plugging up the works. I have seen this more than once. If you have replaced the impeller and still no flow it may be clogged. Check, check, and check again.

well i replaced the impeller. it was in a million pieces. Then ran it and water was coming out slow. SO then I flushed it and ran it. Water was still coming out slow but now the motor died and wouldn't start. I took the lower end back off and found milky water. Any ideas about what I should do next?

How do you unplug the lines if they aren't flowing and you just replaced the impeller? I am also having the same problem with the lower unit and with the same model engine as Tabbott did, only mine is stuck in foreward! What do you do if you can't get the lower unit back on corectly? Is there a trick to these that I am missing?

I know that you put the shifter in the forward postion to get the lower unit back on. I had that problem and found the answer on here.
