The shift lever moves aft for forward, and visa-versa for reverse. The throttle stops (to prevent over-throttling in reverse) work properly, and I can't see how the lever could be made to work the "right way".

Anyone else experience this malady?

Thanks,

Jeff

Not knowing the year of your motor it sounds like the lower unit is from an older model...The older unit fits OK but because of the shift cam it will operate backwards..If so there is no way of correcting it...

Your shift lever should point forward when in Neutral. Then Up is Fwd, and Down is Rev. The lever is on a square shaft. All you have to do is remove it and reinstall it 90 degrees to the right. (From 12:00 to 3:00) The early models were that way. Later models have the lever pointing up. Somebody just put it on wrong.
