I have a 1965 Merc 110, 9.9. Runs fine in forward, but will not stay in reverse. If I hold it in, it will back up. I haven't used it for several years and it will be my winter project. I would appreciate any help with this.

Jim

lets see, it works with a handle right? Have you taken it apart to see anything unusual? Broken pieces?

Re: Merc 110 reverse problem

Hi Jim

Usually when you do not have reverse on Mercury product it is due to the gearcase having been frozen up over winter and the brg carrier pushed out. This moves the reverse gear away from the clutch and pinion gear. This should be inspected and repaired if necessary.

TMD

Re: Merc 110 reverse problem

Thanks for the replies. I do have reverse as long as I hold the lever in position. But as soon as I let go of the lever, it shifts back into neutral.
Jim

Check the propshaft for endplay. Pull it back and forth. There should be a few thou.

Does the shifter physically move back into neutral. Or does the gearcase slip into neutral?

TMD
