stan, you should have only 75-73 ohms through the coil to ground, via the KING LEAD, as per my clymer manual.

go on ebay, and search for a member named "clams_canino"
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2485558697&category=26455

contact him, he has every part you could ever need, and all his parts are guaranteed!!!!

btw, the trigger is part of the distributor assy

Re: Merc 115 1974 serial 3272927(no spark!!!)

Hi Stan,

Looks like all things are pointing to the trigger. You asked what the trigger is. It lives inside the distributor and acts just like a set of breaker points. Inside the dissy is also a rotor plate. it has slots in it that the trigger 'sees' and sends a pulse to the power pack. The power pack then drops about 400 volts across the coil, thus producing the spark. Too easy.

In your other post Chris4564 lists a way of getting the powerpack to produce a spark. this effectively tests proves the rest of the system, isolating the trigger.

Chris...........

Re: Merc 115 1974 serial 3272927(no spark!!!)

Thanks for the prompt reply guys. I did run the test that Chris1956 recommended in where i completely disconnected the distrubutor wires. I think that the test "should" have caused a spark, however my engine did not? I think that this has eliminated the trigger for the time being simply because it wasn't connected.

I think I am left to suspect the coil or the switchbox. The coil i have is like a an "orange block thingy" there apears to be two different coils used on that engine between 1970-78. My engine i believe is 1972 and has the early type coil.

Thanks Again

Stan

Stantman, You appear to have the early coil, The newer-style coil is much more compact and attaches by three 1/4" X 3" fine thread screws.

Re: Merc 115 1974 serial 3272927(no spark!!!)

Thanks so much mike. I went down to my local marina and had a chat with the Mercury dealers. Honestly, they couldn't be more helpful, a fantastic bunch. They sold me a second hand coil for £30 with a warranty. I replaced it and my engine still didn't fire. I didn't mind though cause at least thats that part eliminated. Im almost certain its the switch box so im going to go back down tomorrow and see if they have one.

Assuming now that my coil is ok, I failed the Chris1956 test. Quite safe now i think to assume the switch box a cerial box!

I'll try local and if I cant get it ill give you a shout mike.

Many many thanks

Stan

Re: Merc 115 1974 serial 3272927(no spark!!!)

did you do the test where you bridge the two terminals together on the side of the switch box and place the coil lead about 1/2 inch from a good ground and when you hit the button, it sparks?

other than thats thats all i know of other than the ones in your manual....

try emailing clams_canino or posting this on his inline 6 newgroup

Re: Merc 115 1974 serial 3272927(no spark!!!)

Just a quick question Stan. Is there a brown wire on the switchbox on the side with 4 terminals? If so, disconnect it. It's a pulse wire for the tacho, and I have seen one bring a switchbox down. The best place for that wire is on the rectifier, either of the yellow wires.

Chris.............

Re: Merc 115 1974 serial 3272927(no spark!!!)

I did do that test Mike and it failed. I then changed the coil and it still failed. Should it spark at the coil lead to ground or from the wire im grounding it with? Not sure about that tacho wire Chris, i'll check. Im waiting on a call from the marina just now to let me know if they have a switch box. Im certain its faulty and for the sake of 20-30 pounds i aint gonna moan.

Everything crossed! If it runs i'll let you guys know right away!

Stan

Re: Merc 115 1974 serial 3272927(no spark!!!)

that test should spark between the HIGH TENSION lead coming from the coil to ground, across a 3/8" gap.

if not, its more than likely the switchbox, cause idid it with mine, and it worked...

good luck and repost so we can know whats up

m ikey

Yep, im 110% in favour of blaming the switch box! Trouble is, the guys at the marina dont have one. I dont know where else to try???
