Merc 115 '87 - told bad by 2nd marina, after they re-built carb!

so, I had took my boat to a 2nd mariina to check compression, First marina said not good and not worth repairing. 2nd did check and said compression is ok, and sound ok when running in tank.

They sid the middle carb was leaking and needed to be fixed befor he takes it out to test it ( it has a rattle when under load). now he said that the issue is a piston rod bearing is gone, and that is what the noise is. either repair motor or get new one.

I assume a re-build of the head is a big thing, but what would the cost be compaired to a new(er) motor?

So far it appears a half decent motor is around 3k.

its a '87 inline-6, perhaps not worth it.

Chris, I am not sure I believe any of those shops, at this point. It is probably not cost effective to have a shop repair it however. You can pick up a much newer, used motor for $1K or so.

A bearing would be an easy thing to replace, if that is what it is. You would need to know which bearing it was, and if it is crank or wrist pin side. Crank bearing is the easiest. You would pull the powerhead, lay it on the bench, remove the crankcase cover, remove the connecting rod bearing cover and stick new roller bearings into the grease you speared on the bearing cage. anything else requires that you remove the crankshaft from all six connecting rods.
