merc 115 forward in reverse and viceversa

i just picked upa19ft cierawith a blue stripe 115 merc 2 stroke when iput it in forward it goesreverse and in reverseit goes forward! could it be theprop or something else it spinsclockwise thanks jim

James, Make sure the prop is right handed. That is when it is turned clockwise, (view from behind) the boat will be propelled forward. if that is the case, and the gears are reversed, the lower unit needs to be removed, the lower shift rod changed to the correct spot and then the LU may be reinstalled. A manual is best to guide you thru.
