I had a guy drop off a 115hp Merc 6cyl, serial# 3764002. It looks to be in very good shape, except for the wiring.(badly deteriated insulation) It has all the power trim parts on it and it came with the pump.I have heard that this is a very good engine,I do not know what its worth, if I can get parts for it, or even what year it is. I would like to restore it and then find a boat for it. Unless someone else needs it worse than me, where might a partssource be? If there is one. I havent checked yet I just got it tonight and I am so geeked it runs and everything It appears to be leaking oil from behind the prop (looks clean) for some reason I like this engine, my uncle had one on his boat when I was a kid, and an inline 2 stroke 6 cylinder is kinda kool. Anyway any ideas? Also i need a manual, are they still around?

Re: Merc 115 inline 6

jimmy, jimmy, jimmy...can i have it! i had 2, one REALLY, UNGODLY GOOD, and one that i just sold as parts.

i have a soft spot in my heart for those.

by your serial, it looks to be late 70's, maybe even 80's. easiest way to check is if it has a distributor or not, if it does, its pre 1980, if its ADI ( alternator drivedn ignition) its after 1979. you can buy almost ANY parts for those motors, from the smallest screws and nuts and bearings to the rings, pistons and lower unit gears and props. those motors are really bad azz!!! anybody who has one or had on in the past simply cannot disagree with me!

think about it, all of the later inline mercs were 99 cubic inches, and made anywheres from 90 to 150 hp. WOW !!! at 150 hp, thats 1.5 hp per cubic inch, no other outboard ever came close, then or now !

its a inline 6 cylinder, 2 stroke, 3 carbs, roller bearing performance outboard! they were built just for that reason, performance! not gas mileage. i had mine, a 1150 like yours, on a 16 foot center console and it scooted along at around 50 mph! quick! but it only got about 2 miles per gallon, at best, 1 mile a gallon when at WOT.

you can get any parts for that beast either from grubbs marine at www.oldmercs.com or even better, at www.mercruiserparts.com

this is not your ordinary outboard jimmy, if you cant handle the power and height of this old girl, gimme a call, im just over the big bridge!!!!

heres a big upclose pic of my old 1976 merc 1150:
Hey Mike, My 1977 1500 has the same cowling decals as your photo. Were they the same, or did you switch yours??

OK then, My Merc 1500 has a serial number of 4837654. I was always told it was a 1977, actually a leftover, purchased in 1980. I know it is a small point, but was it a fib?

Chris - Your 1500 is indeed a 1977.

Jimmy - Your 1150 is a 1974. Manuals are available here at iboats, Merc dealers, and some auto parts stores. My local NAPA had carb and fuel pump kits on the shelf for my 1970 1350 and can get a lot of other parts in a day or two. Any local Merc dealer should be able to order parts also or they are available online. Interior wiring harnesses aren't cheap but they are available. If you need any help, Clams Canino is the resident expert on the inline sixes.

Re: Merc 115 inline 6

So Ken, it would appear that I either had 1976 decals on that motor, or the 1977 1500 shared decales with the 1976 1150. Is that correct?

Re: Merc 115 inline 6

I don't know which model years used the blue "hockey stick" decals but my 1977 Merc 500 has them also. I believe the 69's, 70's, and 71's used red stripes. Different blues were used throughout the rest of the 70's and I've seen brown and tan stripes on some in the 80's. Since the same decals were used on multiple model years they are not real accurate for dating the motor.

Brown was used in 84 and 85. 1972 was the first year for blue
