Re: Merc 115 serial number

That is not the serial number. It should be 6440183-7200643 if it's an 84. The number is located on the starboard side on the trim/tilt plate.(assuming the trim/tile and mid section are original. They look as such. I'm in the process of rebuilding my 84, very simple and easy to work on if you have any mechanical skills. Most of these engines went 25+ years w/o needing any major service. Try that with today's expensive crap.

If possible take a look at the head of each piston through the plug hole to see how the crown looks. The ring pin on these pistons had a a habit of pushing into the piston, causing the ring to rotate and then breaking going into the combustion chamber. This happened on two of my pistons but i still had compression.

How much are they asking for her?

He wants $650.00 as is but it needs a carb job. Would probably cost me $350.00. I offered $300.00 so he said he would have his man fix it and get it running and do a compression check. Hope to get it in running condition for $650.00 - $750.00 Trim and tilt work and comes with controls....... Think that price is good ?

Made a deal on it for $350.00 Hope it's what he tells me it is as far as a solid running motor...Always a gamble but for that price I went for it...Comes with a boat and trailer also
