Re: Merc 1400 block cleaning

How much of the block have you disassembled? If you have the outer water jacket cover off, you can use some spray-nine or Castrol Superclean to cut the oil and other residue. Plug the exhaust ports with rags to prevent water and cleaner from going into the cylinders. If the covers are still on, it will be difficult to effectively clean the exhaust passages.
The same goes for the water jacket areas. If the covers are off, a wire brush and a soft brush will help with the corrosion.

Thanks...I have removed the outer exhaust cover and the water jacket cover at the spark plug end of the block...the exhaust side has a lot of carbon build up and the water jackets have that white crystal/powder built up in there...

What I found to clean carbon/oil on bare block is a mix of Power-tune & ATF left soaking overnight and a pressure washer. White vinegar work to clean water passages just flush really good..
