Merc 150 Mid 70's

I went and looked at this today, It's mounted on a Checkmate. It looked rough. The controls had wires sticking out and spliced together, no key or place to put it. Reverse would not engage. The starter pinion was locked up on the ring gear. Most of the wire coatings were crumbled. Was not able to turn it over, although it did spin after the starter was disengaged.

The boat is gutted and the trailer tires were shedding rubber.

I told the guy my wife would would shoot me if I brought this home. He was only asking $200. But I still could not pull out my wallet. He countered with $120 and I still could not pull the trigger. I know it would make a great parts motor or Just part the damn thing out and I could do pretty good.

I still might go back, pull the motor and junk the rest. I know it will not tow the 60 miles back home on the tires it has.

If you don't already have one and need parts.WHY???
Maybe the trailer??? I deal in used parts and wouldn't buy that one.J

That engine could be wort some $ for the right man

Short shaft
Lowered cowl
Possibly a "J" block

Aka, a pre 1500XS engine...

Bye it, and part it out ( I could be interested in the leg and cowl )

And by the look of it... 1973 ??

It is a 73 by the serial #. The seller was telling me it was a 140 HP, But the #'s did not match. If it looked a little cleaner I would have bought it. Tooooo many other projects right now.

Louvers factory? I would think that motor would be worth atleast $200.00?

Yep ... The 1500XS and the 850XS came from factory this way and had a low water pickup lower unit as water entered at the skag and went around bearing carrier into water pump. Some of the 1400SS engines came with vented cowls and stock lower units, not many of these around as limited number produced so Merc would meet the APBA racing rules.Had to have X number of production units sold to public to race a engine in a class...

This would tell me if I looked at picking this up and rebuilding I might have a hard time finding parts and expensive, or are most the parts interchangable with other 1500 /1400's

Not necessary , there are ways, got a ship to address in NJ US if you're considering...
