The tac has not worked for a while and I am constantly having to charge the battery. Manual says there is a relationship between them but I do not know where to start looking. Any suggestions.

Yes, they are related.

The voltage regulator is a 2 inch square aluminum module with 5 or 6 wires coming out of it, probably near the coils. 2 yellow wires go to the stator, 1 or 2 red wires go to the battery via the solenoid battery terminal, and 1 grey wire goes to the tachometer. If there's a black one, it's ground.

Disconnect the yellow wires and test the stator with an ohmmeter. It should have some resistance, but below 1 ohm between the wires, and be open to ground. If that's good, replace the regulator.

hope it helps
John
