Merc 165 OUtdrive, Can I use on off A v 8?

Hello I have a 1974 Sea Sprite With a merc 165. I need an outdrive. I found one that is off a v 8. My merc should have a 1.65 ratio but the one i am looking at has a 1.50 ratio. any way i can make this work? Thanks!

Work? Yes. Is it right? No. It's been done before depending on your boat/weight/intended use. You can make up some of the difference with a different prop to compansate if it's to far off. It's not as bad as going to a 1.98 ratio.
