merc 165 outdrive to a 470 mercruiser motor

Just wanted to know if the merc 165 outdrive is compatible to the 470 engine? Any help would be much appreciated.

All depends on the gearing. merc 165 should be 1.65-1 , 470 should be 1.84-1

So what would happen if you were to run the 470 with the 165 outdrive, would it still run or would it be catastophic? Just looking for a hypothetical to what could happen with a mismatched drive/motor.

may need a lower pitch prop to get the WOT within range
