Hey guys, i just got my first boat and i havent got a manual yet. I was wondering how to change the oil in the outdrive. Straight 6, GM block, merc outdrive. I see a small screw on the bottom which i think will drain the oil, but how do i fill it up? im sure you guys got a kick outta this one ;-)

Hi
Youre right about draining it, remove the vent screw on the top when you drain it.
Youll need a pump that fit in the oil can and on the lower screw,(sierra got it) and you pump slowly until it comes out the upper vent screw.
Regards
Affa

Re: Merc 165 simple question

i use lube in a bottle and have a pump that screws onto the bottle and into the lower plug hole. leave the upper plug out as you fill it up to let the air escape. some of the plugs have o-rings, some don't. a wide bladed, flat screwdriver works good for tightening them back up. the real fun is trying to get the lower plug back in while lube is running out. it helps to put the upper plug in first.

Does anyone know why you can't fill the outdrive from the top instead of pumping it through the bottom? I have always put it in from the bottom, but I never understood why you have to do it that way.

Less chance of getting a false reading on the oil level. Trying to pump a viscous fluid down the fill hole, with nowhere for the air to go, could result in an air lock that keeps you from successfully filling the chamber.
