how good is the merc 170? i currently have a 120 merc, but can get good deal for the 170. is it worth the hassle to swap motors for a few more horses? the advantage i see on the 170 is that it has a seal cooling system, but a stator charging system?

You would be out of your mind to install a 170 in any boat that did not originally have one.

Ayuh,.........Nothing,..... Nothing At All forward of the Transom is the Same......
That's Alot of Swapping.........

And,.......
The 470 was a Marginal Motor,.... At Best......
And,........
It's been Out of Production for 20 Years...........
The 470 was an Experiment................. That Failed

Ayuh,............ I call that a Real Dumb Idea..................:%

Well maybe if you got an early 150 Johnson Ficht for a kicker motor.

The ideal situation would be to swap the 120 for the 170, then remove the Mercruiser outdrive and cobble on a Force L Drive.
Then you have the worst of all worlds in one handy little package.
