My cousin's 175 (Sorry don't know the year) quit on him, with some really bad grinding noises, about 20 miles offshore. At the same time his radio and GPS AND Cell phone died (You have to know my cousin to understand how this is possible).

Anyway they looked at the engine again and the oil line to the oil injection had broken. No way to fix it out there. So they tried starting it again and, to their suprise, it ran, up to about 700 RPM. But of course making really bad (i.e. expensive) noises. Amazingly, they basically managed to idle in from 20 miles out (5 hours) and the thing brought them home.

Now the question is, is that motor totally shot like I think? Just want an idea of what to expect at the shop.

Thanks!

Tom

Pull the heads off and look at the cylinder walls.

They could have poured some oil out of the reservoir and into the gas tank to lubricate it. It might even have come back to life a little bit.

5 hours with no oil, I would bet it's trash.

Why didn't they put the injection oil in the fuel tank?

I would think your cousin should be prepared for major $hop bill$. If it was run without oil at all (for 5 hours? That would be a surprise) it is most likely a goner.

Re: Merc 175 goes boom...

The major damage was done before the 5 hours idle time. Take compression and go from there.

Years ago we were involved in a test with a outboard OE to see how long a motor would run at 1000 to 1200 rpm with no oil. This was a test to see what would happen if the oil was suddenly gone (hole in tank, broken line, ran out etc) and there was no oil on board. 1200 rpm was used because that was what they felt it took to keep the battery alive while using the radio, bilge pump and such.

I figured an hour or so. After each of the test motors ran 12 hours the test was stopped. At that point it was clear that the boat would have been found or idled in. Subsequent tests at higher rpms did not fare nearly as well.

Happy to hear they were OK!
