Im having a bit of trouble with my motor, annd I know this is a topic thats been discussed alot.I have a 1979 175 hp black max 1750.The problem has me shaking my head.
I had no spark at all in the bottom starbord cylinder,I changed the coil and now have spark[second time in a year].I put a timing light on to check all the cylinders,The middle and lower starbord cylinders seem to have a weaker pattern than all the others.I swapped the stator wires on the blocks and the problem did move,so Im asuming its the block.
Is there a possibility that theres a trigger problem sending to much voltage to the coil and blowing it out?The other problem is when I checked the serial # it comes up as an international engine that can have 3 different stators. The one tell tale sign is if it has a voltage regulator on it.I can see something that looks like it can be it mounted under the starter selenoid with 3 wires coming off of it,but Im not sure.Id like to get back on the water asap so if anyone can help me Id apreciate it.

Thanks
David Jones

The Item under the selenoid is the rectifier.I have no voltage regulator. The spark seems to be getting better, but for some unknown reason I can light a test light on the bottom coil.Thats supposed to be a/c power, not d/c.Can that rectifier be the problem?
