Merc 175XR2 SportJet

Great Site! My 1997 175 Sport Jet smokes a ton at idle when cold. It stops smoking once warm. Accelleration and top end seem fine. I am using Merc oil. The hash marks on the linkage are aligned properly. Any clues?

If you mean by cold the 1st time you start it up for the day it is burning the excess oil pooled in the motor from when you shut it off. This is nothing to worry about. If you are talking about<br />running around the lake and then playing on the beach for hrs before starting it up and going for a ride then it is the same thing plus the fact that the oil mix in the carbs is 50-1. So the 50-1 mix + pooled oil = smoke. The best way to cut it down is to slow down out from the beach and idle in to get the oil mix down to 75-1 or so in<br />the carbs and burn out some of the excess oil pooled in the crankcase.

What I mean by cold is both the first time out or after it has not been run for a few hours. The amount of smoke though is incredible. It blanketed the entire marina. It cleared after about 2-3 minutes. The skier behind my boat mentioned there was a fair amount of oil sheen in the water.<br />I read that 2 strokes prefer 87 octane. The marina had only 92. Could this have been an issue?

This is probably a waste, but just wanted to check.... I'm assuming you are running the oil injection. Or just a sraight 50-1 mix out of the tank... Hopefully not both... If you have an oil slick behind your boat, either you have too much oil that in turn can't be burned off or a "possible" firing problem in the cylinders. JMO, I'm not a mechanic.

Have you check the oil pump adjustment, check valves in oil system, vents in oil system? Have thermostats been removed. Engine up to operating temps?
