Merc 1979 80hp no Power

Has good spark and compression, just rebuilt carbs. Starts up but when I start to throttle it dies. Ease into it and it will go a bit better then dies. I've tried adjusting the timing and it doesn't seem to be helping. Someone mentioned reed valves and that if this is the problem the motor is now an anchor.

This is on a friends pontoon boat that just bought a new stator and switchbox...already into pretty deep. Anyone have any suggestions?

It would not start well if the reeds or labyrinth seal were bad, the problem is lean either the low speeds are not adjusted, the low sprrd pickup tubes are dirty or the floats are low
