I am getting ready to order a lower seal kit for my merc 200. I have a leak at the prop seal due to some fishing line wrapped around the prop. From what I have been reading it takes a 2 seals for the shaft ( 1 faceing in and one faceing out) and a o-ring for the bearing carrier to seal this. I am going to order a lower kit as it is just a cheap to buy it this way instead of in pieces. My question is according one site I need 1 of 26-27163 & 1 of 26-26805 & 1 of 25-33465 (old merc numbers) for the seals. Both of the seals have been replaced by a single part number which is 18-2019 and the o-ring has been replaced by 18-7163. When I look up the contents of the lower seal kit which was 26-66303A1 (old merc number) and has been replaced by sierra 18-2627 it has all the parts I need but only list a qty of 1 of the 18-2019 seal. I have checked several sites but all have the same contents.

SIERRA 18-2627

( 2 ) 18-0595 Seal, replaces O.E.# 26-66303
( 2 ) 18-2004 Seal, Water Pump Base, replaces O.E.# 26-20070
( 1 ) 18-2006 Seal, Water Pump Base, replaces O.E.# 26-33467
( 1 ) 18-2019 Seal, replaces O.E.# 26-26805
( 1 ) Upper Face Plate to Water Pump Gasket, replaces O.E.# 24-39623
( 1 ) 18-2828 Lower Water Pump Base to Face Gasket, replaces O.E.# 27-39625
( 1 ) 18-2829 Water Pump Base to Gear Housing Gasket, replaces O.E.# 27-39626
( 1 ) 18-2945 Washer, replaces O.E.# 12-20260
( 1 ) 18-4261 Washer. replaces O.E.# 12-20262
( 1 ) 18-7120 O-Ring, replaces O.E.# 25-38933
( 1 ) 18-7163 O-Ring, replaces O.E.# 25-33465
( 1 ) 18-7164 O-Ring, replaces O.E.# 25-33466
( 2 ) 18-7180 O-Ring, replaces O.E.# 25-26802

My question is does it in fact take 2 seals? The parts breakdown does in fact show 2 seals on the drawing. Do I need to buy an extra one of the 18-2019 seals. Or I am missing something? Any help from the parts experts would be great. This is the last item to get done so the boat can be launched for the first time in 15 years. Thanks

Re: Merc 200 lower seal kit Question

I would just get the lower unit seal kit from Mercury, A-26-66303A1.

The Mercury kit include an assortment of seals as I always have some extra ones left over after each job. I think you will find a pair of seals that will work. Other motors like the 9.8 and 7.5 have a single seal, but 2 seals are better than one. And some engineer designed this with 2 seals.

I like Kenyon Power Boats or shop the internet and buy a Mercury lower unit kit from a Mercury dealer.

Good luck and great motors!
