Hey guys. I've scrolled through these forums many times since being hired as a marine tech at a local shop. Still learning some as I came from a lifetime of automotive and obviously many differences with marine engines. That being said I've run into a major headache I can't seem to figure out and my boss and the customer are at a loss of what the hell could be going on. It's a 200hp v6 Mercury 2 stroke offshore model. (Being used in freshwater). Ran great last year. Got it de-winterized this spring and have had nothing but problems since. Started out the customer complained of the bottom carb leaking. Bought carb kits for all 3 carbs. New plugs too. Got it back together and sounded alright on the earmuffs. Put it in the water and anything over 1/4 throttle it'd bog and die. Did a spark check, and one whole bank had no spark - running on 3 cylinders. Don't have a dva, so couldn't test for signals out of trigger cool or stator. Long story short ended up replacing trigger, one switch box, and the stator (turns out stator was half burned up with melted wires). Sounded super strong on the muffs. Water test same thing falls flat at 1/4 throttle. There was ONE time after setting timing it opened up wide and bout threw me off the boat. Brought it down to idle and never ran right again. Compression good all across the board. Still have spark on all 6. Been through the carbs twice now, all jets clean and clear. Tried timing advanced and retarded. Nothing helps. Tried a portable fuel tank with several good brand cleaners in it. Nothing makes a lick of difference. Please help before I have to send this guy to another shop!
