Hi,

Tried my new (to me) Year 2000 Merc/Mariner V6 200 2.5 carb today - turns out it's not sparking on the top right or middle left pot (as you look at the motor from the rear) All compressions are perfect and equal, just no spark on these plugs - all the other pots spark brightly. The wires going to the effect plug coils are 'number 4 green and white' and 'number 1 green'

Any idea what might cause this and how I could diagnose/confirm? - I have a multimeter if it helps.

Thanks for the suggestion and link - is there a more modular approach to narrow down the issue (like swapping coils or switch boxes to see if the issue moves?)

You can switch the coil with one of the good ones. After that I would follow the procedure SparkieBoat posted. And you need the dva adapter.

the reason you want to thoroughly test your electronics is you may have multiple issues. this is the best way to go, the ole swap and guess can work, but can also have your burning up a new part because you didnt test out the rest of the system. you can swap your coils around and test them.

quick test.
Swap any good coil into #1
>>> spark = 2 bad coils
>>> no spark
>>>>>Pull the trigger wires off #1 Measure ohms between that and #4 (theory, 1 & 4 share the same trigger coil.)
>>>> ohms between 1100 and 1400. >> 1 or more bad switchboxes
>>>> ohms out of spec. >> Probably bad trigger. Verify with DVM tests.

Upper starboard cylinder is #1
Upper port cylinder is #2

Odd to starboard, even to port.

hope it helps

Hi All,

Thanks for the help/advice-it turned out to be a faulty wire from the pickup to the switch box (white one) that had snapped inside the outer - couldnt see it to the naked eye but the continuity tester found it. Followed the trouble shooting guide and all seemed OK hence the full continuity test.

Running on all six now and sounding good :):)
